RALEIGH, NC-Jason Karmanos, Vice President and Assistant General Manager for the National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes, today announced his resignation from that position. Karmanos, who had served as assistant general manager since April 1998, cited personal reasons for his resignation.
As assistant general manager, Karmanos assisted President and General Manager Jim Rutherford in player evaluations, contract negotiations and player movements. His other responsibilities included overseeing the day-to-day operations of the hockey club and the Hurricanes' minor-league affiliates in the AHL and ECHL.
After playing youth hockey in the Detroit area with Compuware, Karmanos played college hockey for Harvard University, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree with honors. He attended the Pittsburgh Penguins' training camp upon the conclusion of his collegiate career in 1996, and had his professional career cut short when he suffered an eye injury while playing for the Raleigh Ice Caps during the 1996-97 season. Upon his retirement from hockey, Karmanos worked for Robertson Stephens and Company, an investment bank located in Boston.
The Hurricanes travel to Columbus today for the first half of a back-to-back, home-and-home series against the Blue Jackets. Carolina plays its final game of the preseason on Friday, Sept. 28 at the RBC Center at 7 p.m.
The Carolina Hurricanes begin their 10th Anniversary regular season on Wednesday, Oct. 3 at the RBC Center against the Montreal Canadiens.
