NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas (March 27)- The Texas Brahmas showcased their talent, skills and pride and defeated the Mississippi RiverKings 3-2 Thursday evening to find their way into the Quarterfinals.
Brahmas goaltender Brett Jaeger was coming off of a shutout victory from the night before, but the RiverKings were not willing to be blanked again as center Ryan Held was able to take a feed from teammates Louis Dumont and Steve Makway for a powerplay goal at the 5:52 mark.
The Brahmas did not give Mississippi much time to celebrate due to a Scott Sheppard goal just one minute later. Kevin Korol and Mike Vellinga were credited the assists.
In the winding seconds of the opening period Brahmas forward Anders Strome put the home team up with second goal in the series. Assists went to defenseman Craig Minard and Brett Jaeger. Despite being outshot in the period 16-7, Texas took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
In the second were several breakaway opportunities for both sides, but it was hustle from Sheppard that gave Texas the chance for a penalty shot. Sheppard was able to put the fans on their feet at the NYTEX Sports Centre when the puck found the back of RiverKings goaltender Sebastien Centomo's net to put Texas up 3-1.
The goaltenders continued to dazzle with brilliant saves in the third but Mississippi was not ready going away easy as Ryan Campbell scored a shorthanded goal with five minutes remaining in the game to put the RiverKings within one.
In the end, the Brahmas back checking slowly shaved the seconds off the clock to give them the advancement to the Quarterfinals against Bossier-Shreveport.
