News And Notes From The ACHA National Meeting

Elected the first two inductees into the new ACHA Hall of Fame – Don Spencer & Tom Keegan, both with longtime affiliations with USA Hockey and the ACHA

-Several coaches received 5, 10, and 15-year service awards.
-Three were honored as ’06-’07 Coaches of the Year–
D-I    Scott Balboni ( Penn St )
D-II   Jim Martin  ( Michigan St )
D-III  Chris VanTimmeren ( Hope (MI) College )

Player of the Year Awards were announced
D-I   Will McMahon ( Oakland U )
D-II  Adam Thomas ( Davenport U )
D-III  Jeff Guy


-The ACHA now has 360 teams (D1-50, D2-146, D3-124, Women’s -40), that cover 46 of the 50 states. (Alaska, Arkansas, Hawaii, and Mississippi have no teams)
-The ACHA has gained 107 teams in 5 years, D-III gained the most, 44 over that span.
-The ACHA website had 4.8 million hits this year.
-The NCAA and USA Hockey has  recognized and increased its help in the growth and development of the ACHA.

Revisions to By-Laws Addressed


-Interpretation of the amateur status of players as is relates to interaction with pro teams, especially Emergency Part-Time goaltender rules. If a player has
A.) signed any contract
B.) received any money, compensation, or gifts
C.) appeared on a professional roster
then they are ineligible. Since some of the rules were unclear, the board is allowing teams to come forward and report violations, which will be handled on a case-by-case basis. The board has already discovered some violations in their research.

-Measure to reduce skaters on ice during overtime to 4-on-4 passed.
-Measure to defer new goalie pad restriction until 2008-09 passed.
-Measure to allow Board of Directors to select ACHA Hall of Fame Members passed.
-Measure to make game contracts mandatory, with up to a $1000 fine if not used failed.
-Measure to raise ACHA cut of ACHA-logo items from 7% to 25% failed.
-Measure to make spitting a DQ rather than a Game Misconduct passed.
-Measure to make broadcasts of ACHA-sponsored events, such as Nationals, Regional, & Showcases, the property of the ACHA, and subject to rights fees, passed.
-Measure to have National Tournament Host buy team & player awards, passed
- Measure to have National Tournament Host supply three comp rooms for ACHA staff, passed


D3 Breakout  Meeting

Discussion:
-Emphasis this season on game contracts and website registration.
-Discussion about an ACHA D3 All-Star game to be held at Nationals.
-Possibility of hosting D2 and D3 regional at the same sites, when possible, to entice bidding cities.
-2007/08 Nationals will be held in Rochester, MN
-Rochester, NY put in a bid for 2008/09 Nationals, but no decision was made

 

Revisions:
-Measure to allow students transferring from an ACHA D1 or D2 program to have a fifth year of eligibility at D3, failed.
-Measure to have 4 ranking periods instead of 5, failed.
-Measure to change Nationals to pool play, failed.
-Measure to allow students to move down and play at a D-III program at Mid-Term, as long as the student transfer is to a different school, passed.
