Alex Ovechkin led the NHL with 65 goals last year and was the engine powering the Capitals offense. Ovechkin is sure to get his fair share of goals this year, but he should also get plenty of help. |

Forward played in three of Carolina’s four exhibition games RALEIGH, NC—Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that forward Jeff O’Neill has decided to end his bid to make the Hurricanes’ roster. O’Neill and team management met after Sunday’s home game against Philadelphia, reaching a mutual agreement to release the former Hurricanes’ first-round pick from training camp.

Nashville acquires Nick Tarnasyk from Tampa Bay for a conditional 2009 draft pick NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Nashville Predators President of Hockey Operations/General Manager David Poile announced today that the club has acquired forward Nick Tarnasky from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for a conditional selection in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. The pick sent to the Lightning is Nashville’s sixth-round choice, unless Tarnasky plays more than 55 NHL games in 2008-09, in which case it turns into a fifth-round selection.

Thewes was co-owner of the Carolina Hurricanes, Plymouth Whalers and Florida Everblades  | RALEIGH, NC—Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced with sadness the passing of Hurricanes co-owner Thomas Thewes. Thewes, who had battled Leukemia for the past two years, died Sunday morning at the age of 76. |

| NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Nashville Predators President of Hockey Operations/General Manager David Poile announced today that the club has reassigned forwards Ryan Maki and Ian McKenzie, defenseman Robert Dietrich and goaltender Mark Dekanich to Milwaukee of the American Hockey League. Additionally, forward Stephen Werner and defensemen Scott Ford and Mark Matheson were released from professional tryouts, but will go to Milwaukee on AHL contracts. |
