WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Washington Capitals have re-signed goaltender Brent Johnson to a two-year contract extension, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today. In keeping with club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Johnson, 29, has played in 12 games this year, his second season with the Capitals, and has a 4-5-3 record in backing up Olie Kolzig. |

He is sporting a 3.50 goals-against average and has a .893 save percentage. In his 11 starts this year, he has recorded 30-plus saves six times.
Johnson was claimed off waivers from Vancouver Oct. 4, 2005, and played 26 games for the Capitals in 2005-06. He finished at 9-12-1, including a 4-1-1 record in his last six starts, with a 1.78 goals-against average and a .958 save percentage in that time.
A fifth-round pick of Colorado in the 1995 NHL Draft, Johnson broke into the league in 1998-99 with the St. Louis Blues and played in six games. He spent the next season playing for Worcester of the American Hockey League before returning to St. Louis the following year. Johnson played for St. Louis from 2000-04 and carded his most productive year in 2001-02, when he played in 58 games with a 34-20-4 record and a 2.18 goals-against average.
Johnson has suited up for 189 games during his career and has a 90-70-13 record, with a 2.51 goals-against average and a .903 save percentage.
